Advisor Liability Statement
Faculty members* are expected to be involved with students in out-of-classroom experiences to enhance our liberal arts culture and to support the holistic development of our students (see the Faculty Handbook at http://facultyhandbook.truman.edu/). The Faculty Handbook includes advising student organizations in its list of involvement that support our liberal arts culture. Acting in an advisory role to chartered student organizations is an activity that falls within the scope of faculty job responsibilities. Board of Governor’s policy indemnifies any person who was or is a party or is threatened to be made a party to any threatened, pending or completed action, suit or proceeding, whether civil, criminal, administrative or investigative, . . . by reason of the fact the he or she is or was a . . . employee or agent of the University . . . against expenses, including attorney fees, judgments, fines, and amounts paid in settlement actually and reasonably incurred by him or her in connection with such action, suit, or proceeding if he or she acted in good faith and in a manner he or she reasonably believed to be in or not opposed to the best interests of the University . . . (see the Board of Governors policy 17.050). Acting in good faith requires an advisor to exert reasonable efforts to be aware of organizational activities, encourage appropriate risk management planning, and discourage activities that are against the law or contrary to the mission and philosophies of the University. This policy will not cover illegal, unprofessional or unethical behavior on the part of an advisor.
